Since its founding in 1986, Fern Berman Communications was an essential part of the gastronomic journey that transformed the United States during the 1980 and 90s.
About Fern
As its Founder and President, Fern Berman was one the most sensitive observers of the food scene, as well as a considerable influence on it. Berman turned away from the model of a publicity factory serving hundreds of individuals, and instead offered a small number of clients her undivided personal attention and quality judgment.
Beginning with her role as Marketing Director at The Silver Palate, for 25 years Berman was essential to nurturing and cultivating the careers of such luminaries as Julia Child, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Michael Lomonaco; Marcella and Victor Hazan, Joan Nathan, Mark Bittman Betty Fussell and Jacques Torres.
She also cultivated the reputations of such institutions as the four-star Le Cirque 2000 and Osteria del Circo owned by internationally-acclaimed restaurateur Sirio Maccioni, the Twenty-One Club, Patroon and Firebird. In Las Vegas, she represented the Bellagio Hotel Restaurants, including Le Cirque, Osteria del Circo, Aqua, Olives, Petrossian and Prime. In Washington, D.C., she represented Restaurant Nora and Asia Nora and in London, Chutney Mary.
Berman also worked extensively in public television on such programs as “In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs,” “Julia & Jacques: Cooking at Home,” “Dessert Circus with Jacques Torres” and “Jewish Cooking in America with Joan Nathan,” and on such public radio programs as Lynne Rossetto Kasper’s “The Splendid Table” (PRI) and “The Faith Middleton Show” (WNPR).
Other Pursuits
In 1995, Berman co-founded the first food website on the Internet, Starchefs.com, with Bob Giraldi, Patty Greaney and Phil Suarez. Under new leadership, today the site remains a success.
Today, Berman is a photographer with a growing reputation and a recent solo exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art. You may learn more about her work and upcoming exhibtions at www.fernbermanphotographer.com
